5 Tips for Writing a Cover Letter That Gets Job Interviews

5 Tips for Writing a Cover Letter That Gets Job Interviews5 Tips for Writing a Cover Letter That Gets Job Interviews18Writing a titel letter can be a tedious task. After youve been on the job hunt for some time, you may be tempted to cut corners and start cranking out generic cover letters. After all, writing a cover letter specific to each and every job that youre applying for takes a whole lot of time, with no guarantee that youll even get a call back from a hiring manager. Here are some tips for writing a cover letter that is mora effective, authentic, and will help increase your chances of getting a job interview.Be quick. Many job seekers will start off writing a cover letter in the exact same way. Theyll write something like, Im applying for the _________ stelle that I recently saw posted in the ____________ location. (Snooze.) Or they will be overly cocky with Stop reading other resumes now I am the perfect candidate (Sure you are, along with the other 200 applicants who claim that. Yawn.)The first sentence of your cover letter should grab your reader, not tell him or her something they already know. Instead, let the hiring manager know why you want this particular job with their particular company. Researching the companys website and showing them youve done your homework before applying will differentiate you from 95% of the other candidates right off the bat. Your enthusiasm for THIS opportunity should shine through from the first sentence.Be personal. Sure, it may be frowned upon to name-drop socially, but when it comes to finding a job, knowing someone at the company who can vouch for you really goes a long way. Considering the fact that most bosses tend to hire people they know (or are personally referred to), its in your best interest to show a connection to your prospective boss within the first paragraph or two of your cover letter. But dont simply mention your shared connections name explain your connection to that individual, along with how th at person has helped you during your career or what you have learned from him or her ideally. Being personal whenwriting a cover letter can go a long way towards getting an interview.Be practical.Gone are the days of addressing your cover letter To whom it may concern. To a hiring manager, that can be a clear indicator that a job candidate hasnt done her homework. Through sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter, it is fairly easy to find out who the person doing the hiring is, and as such, you should use their name when you address them in your cover letter. A generically addressed cover letter could easily wind up at the bottom of the pile, or worse, in the garbage.Be a problem-solver.You read through the job description a few times and understand the demands of the position inside and out. But what about the rest of the companys needs? Do a little digging and find out how your potential position ties into the overall workings of the company. Then, when writing your cover letter, discus s the challenges that the company faces and offers your insights on how you think you could help the company overcome them- if you were hired. Not only does this show that you took the time and effort to find out more about the company, but that youre also a solutions-based person who will work as a team member to fix any issues. Both of these are very strong (and desirable) qualities that a potential boss is looking for in job candidates.Be patient. From the job posting, the position sounds fabulous. It aligns with your career goals and interests, and your workplace skills and successes make you a cinch for the position. Problem is, you really need a telecommuting job, and the ad doesnt say anything about remote work being an option. As eager as you may be to find out if you can work at home, you should remain mum in your cover letter about your desire to telecommute. Instead, wait until youre offered the position before bringing up the work-at-home option (that is, if the issue has nt already been brought up by your prospective boss). That way, you can give him the opportunity to really get to know you (and like you) without having to contend with the issue of you working from home. While having a strong resume is an important part of your job application, its really your cover letter that can get you to the next level in your job search. So take the time to make it memorable, and youll be on your way to job search success in no time.Readers, how much time do you spend writing a cover letter? Do you customize them for each job, or are you (ahem) secretly cutting and pasting parts of previous cover letters into the current one? Let us know your cover letter tips and tricks in the comments section below

Cultural Fit Assessment When Interviewing Your Candidates

Cultural Fit Assessment When Interviewing Your CandidatesCultural Fit Assessment When Interviewing Your CandidatesCultural fit is best understood when you consider it within the context of your organizations culture and how your organizations culture was formed. A potential employee may express and exhibit the characteristics, language, and values that exist within the current organizational culture - or not. You want to hire only candidates whose belief and behavior systems appear congruent with your organizational culture. The candidate whose values, beliefs, outlook, and behavior are congruent with those existing within the current organization is likely to be a good cultural fit for the organization. An employee who is a good cultural fit works well in the existing workplace environment. Employees who fail to fit within the environment generally leave to find a work environment or culture which is more congruent with their own values and beliefs. Cultural Fit as a Selection Cr iteria One of the main purposes of a job bewerberinterview is to enable the employees on the interview team to assess the potential cultural fit of a job candidate. Interaction in the interview setting with a potential employee is key to employee selection. The candidate must exhibit both the necessary qualifications to perform the job and the essential fit needed to work effectively within the existing organization. The purpose of the majority of interview questions asked during a job interview is to assess a candidates cultural fit. How the candidate answers the questions is a deciding factor in employee selection. In a behavioral interview (which is recommended), how a candidate has approached a variety of work situations in the past tells you whether the candidates style and behavior are congruent with the style used successfully in your organization. Examples of Cultural Fit When you are considering the cultural fit of an applicant, here are examples that will guide your a ssessment. An employee who works well on a team and who appreciates the input of a variety of people is likely to work well in an organization that stresses teamwork and in which teams are integral to daily operation. An employee who wants to work alone the majority of the time may not find a good cultural fit in a team-oriented workplace. An employee who wants to be told what to do will not fare well in an organization that stresses employee empowerment and personal accountability. An organization leader whose style emphasizes command and control will not successfully lead in an organization in which employees expect to have their input, opinions, and commitments solicited and carefully regarded. An individual who needs flexible hours because she has children with diverse activities before and after school is not a good cultural fit for a job requiring rigid work shift coverage.A developer who is most comfortable working alone in a cubicle or an office might not have the cultural fit necessary to work on a development team that shares code. This will be especially tricky if each persons part of the project must work interdependently with the work of other employees. So, cultural fit is the ability of an employee to comfortably work in an environment that is congruent with his own beliefs, values, and needs. The challenge for employers is to identify and hire employees who fit their work culture. The second challenge for employers is to consciously shape a work culture that will ensure the success of the organization. The employees hired must be trusted to help with this fine balance. Cultural Fit Is Congruence With an Organizations Culture Culture, the environment you have created for employees in your workplace, is made up of the values, beliefs, underlying assumptions, attitudes, and behaviors shared by a group of people. Culture is the behavior that results when a group arrives at a set of - generally unspoken and unwritten - rules for working together. An organizations culture is made up of all of the life experiences each employee brings to the organization. Culture is especially influenced by the organizations founder, executives, and other managerial staff because of their role in decision making and strategic direction. The rewards and recognition offered to employees, what is valued and reinforced, powerfully shapes an organizations culture. Culture manifests itself in an organizations language, decision making, symbols, stories and legends, anddaily work practices. An employee who is a good cultural fit will work well within the environment and culture you have created.

Hot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing Rules

Hot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing RulesHot Tech Skills Bend Resume-Writing RulesWhat grabbed the recruiters eye welches the security pros certification, on top of his resume and smack dab in front of zu sich face.CISSP Hows that for a resume title? The acronym stands for Certified Information Systems Security Professional. Listing just the acronym without spelling it out, let alone using a more generic term such as Security Engineer, might put off the uninitiated. But to recruiters and hiring managers in the know, CISSP says it all Its one of hottest tech qualifications on the market.Make no mistake Most resumes need to be tailored to an HR generalist. But for a few specialized roles, such as this area of security technology, recruiters steeped in the discipline are trained to look for specific jargon like CISSP, and putting it front and center makes sense. Before you bend resume rules to lead with a term like CISSP, do market research to find out if your qualification is really a go lden ticket to a new job. That means talking to recruiters familiar with your field as well as peers in the same role and former bosses. The CISSP certification is very sought after, very hard to get, said Elizabeth Lions, an author and career coach who was headhunting recently for just that type of professional. In 10 seconds, the candidate made me know he had that credential. Its to engineering as CPA is to accounting. Its a credential thats sought after, that takes time and energy, and that separates him out from other candidates. The hiring process is far from transparent, so its always enlightening when a recruiter pulls back the curtain on the mysterious decision-making process - the one that makes them pluck a resume out of the applicant pile. This time around, Lions shared some specifics about what it was in this professionals resume that scored him the job. Read on for a peek into her impressions of a winning resume.Revising Resume Rules for Special CasesMost of the time, re sume-writing protocol mandates that resumes start off with name and contact information, followed immediately by a title. An executive summary most often follows the title. In this case, the candidate, Nate, started with his name and contact information. But then, in place of a job title such as Security Engineer, he instead listed the title Certifications, under which he put the sole acronym CISSP.Nate then replaced the Executive Summary with a Skills section that contained a slew of bullet points, including * Checkpoint * Juniper * Cisco * Bluecoat * Nortel * Crossbeam * Nokia * SourceFire * RSA * TippingPoint * Qradar * Qualys * Solaris * Tufin * Firemon * ASA * Citrix * Netscaler * DLPIf youre as hot as a CISSP, the rules are clearly a little different, Lions said. Nates certification is his title. His list of skills is his executive summary. His title is Security Engineer, she said. If you did a Google search on the top most sought-after IT skills, thats in the top 5. I already k now hes in high demand.A title like Security Engineer can mean a lot of different things and include duties that dont necessarily get into the nitty-gritty skills her client was seeking, she said. By inserting the specific certificate title, Nate got across the fact that he had met the certificates rigorous requirements a minimum of five years of direct full-time security work experience in two or more of 10 information security domains. (A four-year college degree, a masters degree in Information Security, or a number of other certifications can substitute for one of those years.)Catching the Recruiters EyeIn a nutshell, heres why Nates resume jumped out of the pile for Lions, in her own wordsHe outlined all his skills at the top, so they are easy to find for any recruiter, HR partie or manager. His skills are in top demand, and he knows it.He put his recent credential at the top, knowing that this credential is hard to find in the market. He has worked for top companies that are wel l-known.In addition, Nate had his act together when Lions interviewed him. Here are factors that impressed her beyond the printed page, again in her own wordsHe was very clear in his career moves, which were well thought out when I spoke to him.He had a profile of where he wanted to work and where he did not want to work.He could clearly tell me why he is all that and a bag of chips. He has his sell.He knows who/what/where he wants to be when he grows up.

Good people Why good people are successful people

Good people Why good people are successful peopleGood people Why good people are successful peopleGood people - its a phrase we hear all the time, both in the office and out of it. What do we really mean when we say that someone is good?We recognize that quality when were around it, and we can feel goodness when we experience it, but to really describe it, specifically and fully, is challenging to say the least. Certainly, we dont understand goodness to the degree it deserves.Good and goodness are words so embedded in our everyday colloquies theyve alfruchtwein lost their meaning. If we take on the burden of creating a practical, actionable definition of goodness and putting that goodness into practice, we need to acknowledge that the topic has been a core question and source of inquiry for the worlds greatest philosophers, psychologists, and spiritual leaders for millennia. As we can see from Aristotles relentless quest to better understand the human condition and human spirit, from 20th-century psychosocial explorations of different stages of desire and development by the likes of Abraham Maslow or Erik Erikson, and from many faiths common principles of kindness, it is a near-universal assumption that we should all live our lives striving to be good people. But how can we think of goodness and good people as concepts that can be practically applied in the business world and understand their far-reaching benefits?First, we need to confront the ambiguities in the way businesses use the term good. There are two sides of the word. When hiring employees and managing teams, we often use good as a synonym for competent. But goodness is far more than a persons competencies goodness is about peoples humanity, their values, the qualities inherent in their character, and other intangible traits. We, therefore, need to distinguish goodness as competency from goodness as values, and we need to understand that the latter ought to take greater priority.ConsiderWD-40, which has a unique place in history and pop culture. It was first used on the Atlas space rocket, but then consumers began clamoring for it. Salesmen literally sold the now-iconic blue-and-yellow cans out of their car trunks. Today, WD-40 is a household name. Annual sales exceed $350 million, and the company is valued at more than $1.5 billion. WD-40s meteoric success makes it easy to overlook the most unique aspect of the company the people who work there.WD-40 has managed to retain its staff at three times the national average. Ninety-seven percent of employees report that they love - not just like - to tell people they work at WD-40.The companys CEO, Garry Ridge, is unequivocal about the source of WD-40s remarkable success Its about people, its about learning, its about our culture, its about our tribalism, he explained to me.What makes WD-40 a special place to work is something that transcends the talent of its employees - which I am sure is great, but not far superior to the talent o f competitors employees. WD-40s greatest competitive advantage is its culture of good people. Its leadership has created a company that its employees believe in authentically. They genuinely find meaning both in their work and in their coworkers. And thus, WD-40s incredible results, year after year.Despite the massive success of companies like WD-40, many people still believe that theres no place in the business world for soft concepts like good, goodness, and good people. Business is business after all, right? These people assume that leading a good business means focusing solely on getting results. But the truth is, now that prolonged competition, greater availability of information, and technological advancements have created a more level playing field, people matter more than anything else. They add value at every point in the organization. The best companies arent just machines to maximize profits they create widespread, positive change in their employees, their communities, and their industries. When good people imprint good values and qualities onto others, and they, in turn, do the same, they create enduring value and forward progress in businesses. And even if you only care about maximizing profits and returns, goodness and good people benefit the bottom line as well.By putting the meaning back into the suitcase term of good people, we can elevate ourselves and the people around us - and change the face of business, perhaps even whole societies and the entire world. After working in and advising organizations both good and not so good, starting a few companies of my own, and investing in about 50 others, Ive come to believe that pursuing goodness in yourself while surrounding yourself with good people is the only leadership decision that really, truly matters. When we ask ourselves why we admire leaders (or for that matter, people in general), the answer is predictable they put people first and understand and practice the values that underpin goodness.T hese leaders are committed to improving everyone around them just as much as they are committed to improving themselves. They feel a duty to serve others by inspiring and shaping them to become the best, fullest version of themselves. The leaders and people who do this, as management guru Tom Peters says, dont create followers. Instead, they create more leaders. I have come to believe this, and I see people and their values asI have come to believe this, and I see people and their values as the most critical competitive advantage that exists- period. This article is an excerpt from Good People The Only Leadership Decision That Really Matters by Anthony Tjan in agreement with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. 12 Interesting Career Books for Lawyers

12 Interesting Career Books for Lawyers 12 Interesting Career Books for Lawyers Lawyers spend tons of time reading for work, but it’s worth it to make some time for career-related reading, too. After all, most people spend more time planning a vacation than strategizing about their career path!   Books to Read for Career Success If you’ve got a bit of spare time, check out these interesting book suggestions for your legal career: Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Carol Dweck. If you only read one book on this list, make it Mindset. Carol explains her research on a growth vs. a fixed mindset and outlines the repercussions for a career, life, and more. In a nutshell, having (or developing) a growth mindset can improve happiness and lead to greater success in all aspects of life. Well worth a read!So Good They Can’t Ignore You, by Cal Newport. If you’re tired of people telling you to “follow your passion!” this is the book for you. Cal makes a solid case that developing in-demand skills, and parlaying those skills into greater leverage over your career, is the key to career success and happiness. If you’re looking for a new way to think about career development, this is the book for you. The Startup of You, by Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha. Written by the founder of LinkedIn, this book is a career manifesto for the 21st Century. As the book argues, the “career elevator” has stopped. Few people take an entry-level job, climb the ranks, and retire from the same organization 30 years later. Thinking of your career as a startup can open up new avenues for advancement, and will help ensure you’re never left behind when your company or firm changes course.  The Four-Hour Work Week, by Tim Ferris. If you’re used to thinking about your career in terms of billable hours, this book is a revelation. Although a work week of exactly four hours probably isn’t realistic for anyone, the basic concept - that you’re better off developing a product or business that can support you instead of trading your time for money in perpetuity - is a valid one. Even if it only makes you momentarily question the validity of the billable hour model, it’s worth a read! Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live, by Martha Beck. Written by “Oprah’s life coach,” this is an interesting model of how to find the work and career that’s right for you, by paying careful attention to your reactions (bodily or otherwise) to different tasks and people. It also includes a useful Map of Change, which lays out the different steps that tend to happen as people move closer to their ideal path.  All the Money in the World: What the Happiest People Know About Getting and Spending, by Laura Vanderkam. It’s no secret that many lawyers are in it for the money. But, is it really worth it? This book offers a new way to think about getting and spending money, with a goal of greater career and life satisfaction. Transforming Practices: Finding Joy and Satisfaction in the Legal Life, by Steven Keeva. If you’re feeling dissatisfied with your legal career, this is the grand dame of lawyer self-help books.  Lawyer, Know Thyself: A Psychological Analysis of Personality Strengths and Weaknesses, by Susan Swaim Daicoff. An interesting overview of the “lawyer personality” and the problems it causes - personally and professionally. The Lawyer Bubble: A Profession in Crisis, by Steven Harper. An interesting and important read connecting an oversupply of lawyers, increasing career dissatisfaction among attorneys, and the imploding of several well-known law firms. BigLaw focused, but worth a look! Tomorrow’s Lawyers: An Introduction to Your Future, by Richard Susskind. A short, readable introduction to many of the challenges the legal profession will face for the next 30 years. I reviewed Tomorrow’s Lawyers here if you’d like more info.  The Happy Lawyer: Making a Good Life in the Law, by Nancy Levit and Douglas O. Linder. If the prior couple of books depressed you, check out The Happy Lawyer. It explores the root causes of attorney dissatisfaction and offers suggestions for aspiring lawyers, law students, and practicing attorneys on how to be happier and more content working as a lawyer.   The Anxious Lawyer, by Jeena Cho and Karen Gifford. Mindfulness is in the news a lot lately, and lawyers are even jumping on board. The Anxious Lawyer is an 8-week guide to creating a happier, more sustainable law practice using meditation.   Whether youre looking for happier law practice or ideas on what else to do next, youll find them in the books above. Enjoy!

Marine Airborne and Air Delivery Specialist

Marine Airborne and Air Delivery Specialist Marine Airborne and Air Delivery Specialist In the Marine Corps, Airborne and Air Delivery Specialists are trained to airdrop needed supplies to Marines in combat zones and other areas where they have limited access to supplies. These specialists make sure supplies are packed, the equipment is working, and the mission plan is sound. The Marines categorize this job as military occupational specialty (MOS) 0451. Duties of Marine Airborne and Air Delivery Specialists Marines in MOS 0451 hold down three main areas of responsibility: air delivery, equipment maintenance, and parachute packing. Similar to the work done by loadmasters, Marines in this job have to figure out the safest way to pack and distribute equipment loads on the plane. Theres more to it than throwing your luggage aboard before a flight, obviously â€" since in this case, your luggage weighs a ton and its wearing a parachute. Lets not forget, its a poor idea to blindly trust that everythings in working order when youre planning to drop a pallet (or a person) from miles above the ground. Mundane though it may sound, it takes a dedicated team of air delivery specialists to make sure all of the equipment needed to perform the airdrop is in working order. Military Requirements for MOS 0451 Like all aspiring Marines, an enlistee aiming to become an Air Delivery Specialist must have a high school education. The MOS is restricted to US citizens and only accepts volunteers. On the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests, recruits need a general technical score of at least 100, with no exceptions. And because its a huge part of the job to be involved in dangerous jumps over water, recruits must achieve at least an intermediate-level qualification during the water survival phase of boot camp. If youre already a Marine serving in another occupational field, the Corps MOS Manual clearly states you can only move into the 0451 field if youre a lance corporal (E-3) or corporal (E-4) with less than six months in that rank. Sergeants (E-5) and below in the Active Reserve program  may also be able to move into air delivery if full-time vacancies are available at a reserve unit. Education for MOS 0451 The complete training package for a new 0451 takes about seven months at a minimum, counting boot camp and Marine Combat Training. Job training takes place at Fort Lee, Virginia, an Army base with a resident Marine cadre attending various Army schoolhouses aboard the base. In nine weeks, the Armys Parachute Rigger Course covers the 0451s three main areas of responsibilities in one phase each: The aerial delivery phase teaches students to prepare an airdrop from start to finish. This phase of the course concludes with a live airdrop, where Marines pack the cargo parachutes, rig the loads to be dropped, place the loads in the aircraft and recover the loads and equipment once the goods are dropped. The aerial equipment phase teaches Marines everything they need to know about inspecting, fixing, and maintaining parachutes and airdrop equipment. The parachute packing phase is pretty self-explanatory. But lest you think learning to pack a parachute sounds boring, heres the twist: To make sure youve been staying awake in class, youll be required to jump the parachute you packed during the examination. Obviously, if youre going to be jumping with the parachute you packed, you need to know how to jump. That means as a 0451, you get the added perk of attending Army Jump School, a school so coveted by Marines that the limited seats afforded to the Corps are frequently used as a reenlistment bonus.

Inspiring life lessons from our favorite bold women, real and fictional

Inspiring life lessons from our favorite bold women, real and fictional Inspiring life lessons from our favorite bold women, real and fictional The theme of International Women’s Day on March 8 is #BeBoldForChange. According to the official  website, this involves urging everyone - men and women - to “call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world- a more inclusive, gender equal world.”Take inspiration from these women, real, historical or fictional, who have been brave, brilliant, bold or simply badass on their way to shattering the glass ceiling. The fear-fighter, Tamika Tremaglio  Tamika Tremaglio, a lawyer and MBA at Deloitte Risk and FinancialAdvisory, offered advice on being bold as an antidote to fear: “Fear can stand for ‘forget everything and run’ â€" or it can stand for ‘face everything and rise.’ Trailblazing women live the culture of courage, where they find ways to remove fear from the equation so they can think about what they would do differently if fear were not a factor. We need to be more deliberate about removing fear from our day-to-day dilemmas.”The advocat e for authenticity, Peggy Johnson  Ă˘€œOne of my boldest moves was to choose to diverge from what successful people around me were telling me to do,” said  Peggy Johnson, Executive Vice President, Business Development at Microsoft. Here’s what Johnson told Ladders about what she learned in her rise.“See, for years, everyone around me had painted the same picture of what success looks like: That to be a leader, you have to be the loudest person in the room. Brute force was apparently the only path to the top. I tried their approach, and it never felt natural to me. I elbowed my way into discussions, I interrupted during meetings, and I raised my voice every so often. Once I even pounded my fist on the table … and it was so awkward! Not just for me, but for everyone else in the room, because there’s nothing more uncomfortable than watching a person try to be someone they are not â€" and that wasn’t me. I finally decided that, even though my career may suffer for it, I could n’t keep trying to be someone I wasn’t. Turns out, being my authentic self â€" a quiet leader â€" was a catalyst for my career taking off. I learned that who I am matters more to my success than how I’m supposed to be.”The woman who sexed up Mary Tyler Moore, Susan SilverSusan Silver, author of the forthcoming memoir “Hot Pants in Hollywood Sex, Secrets Sitcoms” was a writer for The Mary Tyler Moore show. She told Ladders that “Mary’s sexual “boldness” was something I pushed for. An article in a Chicago paper said she was “undersexed” so I pitched a story where she spent the night with a reporter. She asks Rhoda, “Am I undersexed?” and Rhoda says “I hope so, as it’s the only thing I’m better at than you.”MTM was known for being simultaneously perky and vulnerable, but it’s frequently her unexpected boldness that makes her an enduring feminist icon.Madame President, Edith WilsonAfter President Woodrow Wilson suffered a massive stroke in 1920, hi s wife Edith became the unofficial de-facto president of the United States. Eager to protect her husband’s reputation, Mrs. Wilson became the only person to filter messages to and from the president. Since there were no clear constitutional laws in place about succession, Mrs. Wilson effectively ran the country for just over the year and a half remaining in her husband’s presidency. It’s even more amazing considering that she did it was only months after the 19th amendment was passed, granting women the right to vote. The Hollywood tech pioneer, Hedy Lamarr  Austrian born Hedy Lamarr (nee Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler) was known as the most beautiful woman in the world,  and co-starred with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. Known for her saying that “any girl can be glamorous. All she has to do is stand still and look stupid,” Lamarr herself was anything but stupid. An early marriage to a Nazi sympathizer allowed her access to information about advanced weaponry, when he took her to secret meetings to show her off. Lamar hated the Nazi regime and escaped to London and then Hollywood. At the age of 26, Lamarr, along with American composer George Antheil, created and patented a secret communications system called “Spread Spectrum” which became the backbone of modern wireless and cellular communication. Lamarr’s patent expired before it became widely used though, and she never earned a cent off her invention. Ironically, despite wanting to stay in engineering, she was considered more valuable to the war effort through her acting: when selling war bonds she raised $7 million in one night. Other inspiring womenAda Lovelace: Girls who code, take note. Lord Byron’s daughter was raised to nobility, but spent her days as a mathematician. She wrote what is now recognized (and wasn’t found until the 1950s) as instructions on how to create the first computer program- in the mid 1800s. She’s considered the first computer programmer. Josephine Baker: Discrimin ated against in the U.S., Baker moved to Paris and became one of the most provocative performers of the 1920s. When she returned to still segregated America in the 1950s, Baker was threatened by the KKK and 36 hotels refused to make reservations for her. How bold was Baker? In 1963 she was the only official female speaker standing beside Martin Luther King at the march on Washington. Joan Jett: A hard rocker who fronted punk-ish girl band the Runaways, before heading the Blackhearts, Jett is often lauded as a feminist icon for never quite fitting the expected role of women in music. She boldly sang at a time when women were obsessed with caring too much: “I don’t give a damn about my bad reputation.” Tomoe Gozen: A twelfth-century female samurai warrior known as part of the Onna-bugeisha (fierce female warriors of Japanese nobility) Gozen was known for beauty and bravery and for protecting her home and family. Michonne on The Walking Dead: If you think of the zombie apocalypse as a metaphor for the work space, Michonne wields her katana to cut through the dross and dead weight trying to pull her down. Who can’t relate to that?  Wonder Woman: Created in 1941 as a superhero who fought Nazis, Princess Diana of Themyscira assumed the persona of Diana Prince and dedicated her life to fighting injustice. Her tiara, a sign of royalty, also doubles as a weapon when needed. Her shiny cuff bracelets, designed to fight evil, have been an inspiration to young girls for over 70 years.

5 Things Art Taught Me About Being a CEO

5 Things Art Taught Me About Being a CEO 5 Things Art Taught Me About Being a CEO As the CEO of peer-to-peer investing platform Fast Invest, I use my training in business and knowledge of technology to make the company a success. Before I was a tech CEO, however, I was an artist. I have a degree in fine arts from the Vilnius Academy of Arts, and you may  be surprised to learn my experience in art has been very useful to my work as a CEO. Art degrees may seem like they dont prepare students for the realities of modern business, but my time at the Academy of Arts taught me invaluable lessons that I use on a daily basis, like the following: 1. Be Observant In order to recreate something in paint, you need to be truly familiar with your subject. Simply painting a tree trunk with some leaves and flowers isnt enough to create something beautiful. You need to pay attention to the way the light falls on the bark, the way the blossoms rustle in the wind, and the contrast between the treetops and the sky. Likewise, being observant pays off in the startup world. The best way to make your business stand out is to observe your surroundings. Observe the market, observe the systems in place, and observe your competitors. Identify what makes your business a necessary part of the economy and better than the competition. If you are able to truly see and understand your surroundings, your startup will be much better for it. 2. Dont Be Afraid of Failure It took many tries before I painted something of which I was proud. In order to create a masterpiece, you have to fail first â€" and by fail, I mean really fail. As a young artist, I would sometimes get angry if what I painted didnt look like what I intended. At the time, I didnt understand the importance of failure. I hadnt yet realized that with each draft of a painting, or each attempted work of art, I would be able to learn from the experience and apply what I learned to the next draft. Failure improved my ultimate results. Fast Invest has grown tremendously in the past few years, but not every idea we have is a good one. When something doesnt work out as planned, Im able to look at what happened and apply those lessons to future projects. 3. Be Patient In the fast-moving fintech world, it may seem like everything is rushed. Quick â€" expand our operations! Ah â€" we need to integrate new technology! Move faster! But rushing isnt a recipe for success at all, even if it seems like technological innovations occur at an ever-accelerating pace. Good work takes a long time, both in art and in business. I learned from my years as an artist to be patient with both the process and with analyzing results. If you rush, your finished product may be sloppy. 4. Be Disciplined According to TV shows like Silicon Valley, tech CEOs are always sitting around in sweatpants, only working when they feel like it. The reality is much different. I work 10-12 hours a day, every day. It is my job to know about every aspect of the company, to truly understand what each person is  doing and what each project  is. This can be exhausting and difficult work, but I have committed to it nonetheless. My discipline is a skill that I learned from being an artist.  I wasnt always  in the mood to paint, but I needed to practice and put in the hours to create something special. 5. Dont Be Afraid to Color Outside the Lines In art school, we studied the masters of the form. Without an appreciation for the best artists of the past, I wouldnt have been able to create the art I wanted to create. The same principle applies in technology and business: We can learn best practices by studying successful entrepreneurs and CEOs and the decisions theyve made. However, we cant be limited by what has been done in the past. We need to break the mold and find new ways of doing things. Currently, Fast Invest is working extensively with blockchain software, making it useful and accessible to people who previously werent using the technology. Working with new technology and expanding previously established markets is an important part of being a successful innovator. Simona Vaitkune is the CEO of Fast Invest.

Eating chocolate at lunch and 8 other ways to beat SAD at work

Eating chocolate at lunch and 8 other ways to beat SAD at work Eating chocolate at lunch and 8 other ways to beat SAD at work Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) impacts over two million people each winter. SAD is characterized by feelings of  fatigue, depression, and anxiety  that occurs at the same time each year.1. Eat dark chocolate.Keeping a bar of dark chocolate at your desk can do more than satisfy your sweet tooth: it can also elevate your mood. Studies show that dark chocolate promotes the release of endorphins that provide an instant boost to happiness. Dark chocolate is also rich in serotonin, the neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and  happiness.2.  Drink turmeric tea.Turmeric is a powerful plant that serves many functions and has been  proven to ease symptoms  caused by major depression. The main component of turmeric, curcumin, modulates various neurotransmitters, so swapping out your morning coffee for a cup of turmeric tea may be the little boost you need to keep the winter blues at bay.3. Invest in a desk plant. While every season has its positives and drawbacks, havi ng most greenery die is one of winter’s pretty big downsides. Instead of waiting around for March or April to roll around to experience signs of life, take matters into your own hands and invest in a plant for your desk.4. Dab on an essential oil.An essential oil is a concentrated aromatic liquid extracted from plants that are commonly used to promote relaxation. To help deter the winter blues, look for an essential oil with soothing properties such as lavender or lemongrass, and dab it on your wrist throughout your workday. Essential oils are easily available in drugstores, some health shops, and through multiple online vendors.5.  Declutter  your desk.Spring may be the first season that comes to mind when you think of giving your space a thorough cleaning, but in winter, a fresh start can be what you need to help keep the blues at bay. Getting rid of things you don’t need and straightening up your everyday items can give your space a more peaceful feeling.6. Get rid of your o ffice blinds.Because winter provides so little opportunity to take in light, it’s essential to make the most out of the hours that light is available. Ditch the shades in your office, and let as much sunlight in as possible.7. Practice guided imagery. While you may not have time for a full-on  meditation  session during the work day, practicing guided imagery during a short stretch of downtime may give you the boost of relaxation you need to make it through your day. During a guided imagery session, you may picture something as simple as sitting on a beach or walking through a park at dusk. They key is to pick an image that engages all of your senses to help you momentarily disassociate and relax.8. Cut carbs. While the first instinct after experiencing a hit of SAD may be to load up on comfort foods like chips and cake, reaching for carbohydrate-rich foods can actually be counterproductive to fighting the blues. The happiness delivered is short lived, as the spike to blood sugar le vels will leave you feeling worse after.9. Eat asparagus.Get the most out of your  lunch  break by using it to help combat SAD. Asparagus contains heaps of tryptophan, an amino acid that is essential to producing serotonin. Add it to a salad or use it as a side to reap the  benefits.A version of this post previously appeared on  Fairygodboss, the largest career community that helps women get the inside scoop on pay, corporate culture, benefits, and work flexibility. How to Build Strong Bonds With HR and Finance

How to Build Strong Bonds With HR and Finance How to Build Strong Bonds With HR and Finance If you work as a manager in an organization large enough to have dedicated human resources and finance functions, you will be well served to cultivate strong working relationships with the professionals on those teams. While building strong relationships with all of your peers across functions is a good practice, these particular groups can be some of your best advocates and allies in challenging situations. It pays to know just a bit about what makes these professionals tick. Here are a few approaches that will help you foster and strengthen these important relationships as you climb the corporate ladder. 1) Reach Out and Offer Information Take time to sit down with your primary contacts on these teams and share information about your groups mission and challenges. Be certain to ask the same about their focus and primary goals as a group. If you are a new manager, this is a great excuse to meet with your representatives from these teams and ask for their insights on their dealings with your group in the past. Ask for areas where they would like to see improvement. And then do something about it. 2) Share Feedback From the Market If you operate in a customer-facing group such as sales, marketing, or customer support, extend invitations to your human resources or finance contacts to meetings where the focus is on sharing information about customers, competitors, and partners. Do not discount how important this is to people operating at least one degree of separation from the action in the market. While everyone recognizes the company’s need to acquire and keep customers, for many who labor in internal facing groups, the realities of the marketplace are not tangible. They will appreciate your efforts to help them bridge this knowledge gap. 3) Promote Strategic Involvement Both human resources and finance should have a seat at the table when it comes to the work of planning for the future, yet in some firms, they are not directly involved in these important discussions. To the extent that you can influence this issue, strive to involve these teams in the work of strategy. After all, this effort is about engaging and focusing talent on opportunities to drive numbers. The individuals in these groups are ultimately critical cogs in strategy execution efforts. 4) Avoid Gaming the Numbers Depending upon your role, you will either work with finance on revenue and expenses or just expenses. For sales managers, finance gets the first and last vote on revenue recognition policies and decisions, so do not attempt to game the system. Be completely transparent with your team’s numbers and avoid any hint of gamesmanship. If you manage a cost center, be diligent about managing and forecasting your costs and bring potential problems to the attention of finance immediately. If and when future problematic situations arise, your history of forthright behavior will buy you a bit of extra help when you need it. 5) Create Positive Challenges Everyone loves a positive challenge. Setting aside the benefits management side of human resources, your primary work with them will focus on finding talent and resolving problems with the talent on the team. Both are mission critical to your success and survival as a manager. Many of your hiring situations might be out of the ordinary as you invest in new markets and pursue people with skills and experiences new to your culture. Your ability to work with human resources and tailor job requirements and search specifications will prove critical time and again in important recruiting activities. 6) Seek Guidance Early on Problems Run, do not walk, to offer an early warning and seek guidance on problems. The problem situations are inevitable and the stakes for organizations and careers are high when it comes to people issues. In many instances, your  human resources  contacts will offer guidance on how to navigate a difficult situation and maintain corporate compliance. And if things go bad, they are the ones invited to facilitate cleaning up your mess. You will be glad you involved them early. 7) Partner on the Big Projects As you rise through the ranks, you will grow more dependent upon these teams to help you with large-scale initiatives. For example, in a particularly complex and fast-moving company restructuring process, the finance department can help evaluate investment options and build forecast models. Their work could wind up being the instrumental piece required to gain board of directors approval for restructuring plans. Human resources can bring a restructuring plan to life, help evaluate and develop new compensation packages, and enable critical hiring activities as well as strategize about any position eliminations. 8) Help Them Achieve Their Goals Tune in to these groups unique functional goals and support their efforts. Your willingness to provide resources for an important project or to pilot a new process or policy will be appreciated and remembered. The Bottom Line It is easy to view the shared services functions of human resources and the finance group as just part of the companys operational process. A Literary Agents Advice to Childrens and YA Authors

A Literary Agent's Advice to Children's and YA Authors A Literary Agent's Advice to Children's and YA Authors For many aspiring authors, publishing a childrens book is the dream. One of the first cautions most publishing professionals give, though, is that the childrens book market is quite different than the adult book market.   A vice president at Curtis Brown Ltd. literary agency, Elizabeth Harding represents authors and illustrators of juvenile, middle grade, and young adult fiction. Her list includes New York Times bestsellers, Newbery, National Book Award, Printz, and Coretta Scott King honor and award winners. With decades of literary agent experience, she is well-qualified to understand the marketplace. To Write Childrens Books, Read Childrens Books Valerie Peterson: When someone says to you, I want to write a kids book, what do you say? Elizabeth Harding: Id ask: Have you read any recently? I think people feel so connected to kids books- especially with picture books- because if you read Goodnight Moon or Madeleine or one of many other picture books when you were young, I think that you feel like you just read them yesterday. Theres a whole association with the books that you read as a child. But I think its very important for aspiring authors to take a look at and really familiarize themselves with whats being published today. Your Friendly Neighborhood Childrens Librarian VP: So, go do your book market research in a bookstore… EH: Im in publishing, so I bring books home all the time, and being in New York City, my kids are more attuned to the bookstore than the library. Social media has helped spread the word about books. There are so many advocates of childrens books in the publishing community, and theyre really active on social media. But for someone who is new and starting out writing a childrens book, its worth it to befriend your local librarian because she or he is probably the most knowledgeable person about kids books. Not only will the librarian know whats selling- which is not always whats the best- theyll know what is the best. That goes especially for picture books and middle-grade books. Teachers and librarians are a fierce group of advocates and gatekeepers for childrens books. VP: Are teachers and librarians gatekeepers for Young Adult books and authors, as well? EH: Yes, but in the case of YA and teen books, the kids are finding and/or buying the books themselves, whereas a picture book and a middle-grade book are often recommended by a teacher or librarian. The Childrens Book Market VP: Youve been agenting kids books for nearly 20 percent of Curtis Browns 100 years. Can you comment on the state of the kids book market today? EH:  The  childrens book market  has always been totally distinct from the adult market. The difference today from when I started in the business is that childrens books were a little more below the radar they are now- now, its a big business. I mean, its always been a business, but now its recognized as such.  Childrens book publishing is estimated to be a $3 billion business. VP: Could you elaborate on that? EH:  Basically, after successful books and series like Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket,  Twilight, and  The Hunger Games, the industry now recognizes that childrens books and  Young Adult books  make money. In that respect, the publishing perspective on it is similar now to its perspective on the adult market- the realization that theres money to be made focused industry attention on the market and its potential. School and Library Sales VP: So, aside from the age ranges of the intended readers,  what factors distinguish the childrens market from the adult? EH:  Where the retail booksellers have been the primary market for adult books, for childrens books, the school and library markets have always been really important to sales- and theres been a recent resurgence there. To give some historical perspective- 20 years ago, the school and library market was very robust and, at the time, it was great if your childrens book sold in bookstores, obviously, but it wasnt the focus. Then  Barnes Noble  and  other superstores  and  Amazon  came into the picture, and it became really important to be able to sell your books through those venues; a lot of weight was put on those sales. The focus shifted [from schools and libraries] to getting books onto the picture book wall at BN. The childrens market began to rely heavily on those retail sales, which hadnt traditionally been the case, and which was more in tune with how adult books were sold. There still is a lot of weight put on those sales, but were back to having the school library market being really critical. VP: So that would support your suggestion to aspiring authors that they engage their local librarians for advice and input. EH:  Yes. The picture book market is starting to tick back up, and its coinciding with all the buzz about standards and Common Core, and so now the teachers and the librarians and the school market are once again really important to the success of a book. Schools and libraries never really  lost  their importance, but I think theyre back in the spotlight. Independent Booksellers VP: How have shifts in retail bookselling affected the childrens book market? EH:  One interesting thing is that independent booksellers have been compelled to be so much more nimble and creative to stay competitive and so many of them have gotten really good at selling picture books and middle-grade books. There would sometimes be a situation when Id hear that Barnes Noble passed on an authors book and it used to be devastating- devastating. I would have an inconsolable author and have nothing to really to be able to tell him or her. Thats become less and less the case. Of course, its great if the book is at Barnes Noble, but it doesnt  need  to be there. If they pass - while its not ideal- between school, library, and the indies, now were able to say, Thats OK. There are other ways to sell the book. The Young Adult (YA) Market VP:  Young Adult has become so popular  in recent years. Any words of wisdom for aspiring YA writers? EH:  First, Id caution anyone writing for that audience that I think YA readers can sniff out things that are not authentic faster than anyone else. Again, thats why I think its important to read- because its important to understand that your readers are complex, emotional, smart, interesting kids and your characters better be the same. You cant get anything by a YA reader. VP: Any personal recommendations for YA research reading? EH:  I think three of the cornerstones of YA are  The Outsiders  by S. E. Hinton,  The Pigman  by Paul Zindel, and  The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. Those happen to all have been represented by my Curtis Brown predecessor Marilyn Marlow, and they are absolutely great examples of excellence in the genre. VP: No dystopian battles or vampires among those. Can you speak to Young Adult trends? EH:  The YA market is cyclical, like many. Right now theres a trend toward contemporary- eventually, well get back to dystopian, vampires, and werewolves. Then fantasy,  romance, and back to contemporary. Mermaids even had their moment for a bit. The readers dont disappear just because the trend changes- the readers are there! Getting a Literary Agent VP: The conventional wisdom used to be that childrens authors dont need an agent, but that seems to have changed pretty dramatically. Can you speak to todays necessity of having an agent? EH:  Its interesting but when I started almost 20 years ago, there werent so many agents  handling childrens books, and the YA/teen market was much smaller than it is now, so there were fewer kids book agents and the author-editor relationship was forged directly, and there was a lot of intimacy in that. I think the author-editor intimacy is still there, but making that initial connection is harder than it was when I started because the business is so much bigger now- there are so many more authors and editors. Thats where an agent comes in. VP: You also represent illustrators. How does that differ from representing writers? EH:  Its a little bit harder to represent an illustrator, only because youre selling style, rather than a concrete manuscript. As an illustrators agent [my getting them a book deal] is a lot of making sure that people have eyes on their portfolios. Its also an outgrowth of my constantly talking to editors. Sometimes it will come up as I have a great manuscript about such-and-such topic- do you know anyone who has that kind of look or feel? Its a lot about staying in front of people, keeping the illustrators work under their noses. Agent Advice VP: What advice would you have for someone  looking for a literary agent? EH:  Be professional. The level of querying since I started has gotten much more elevated. I think its because people are doing much more research, and there are many more opportunities to come to a site like yours and learn more about the process before taking a step out into the world… But its surprising how many interactions I have with someone who doesnt act professionally. Even if its someone who sends me an email query. Email queries all start to look alike, but if I email back and say Id be interested in reading 50 pages,  dont  send back a response in all caps OMG! You have to continue that professionalism, carry it through. Its important; again going back to the fact that childrens book publishing is a business, its important. VP: How do you find the authors you want to represent? EH:  I get a lot [of manuscripts] over the transom- I have a pretty big list at the moment so generally if I ask for material its either that I find the subject matter interesting or it fills a hole in my list- its something that I dont have on my list. I get a lot of referrals from other authors I represent, which is always very flattering. I have four kids, so I dont do a lot of conferences at the moment- but I used to do a ton, and I find them very energizing. I like meeting someone in person and putting a face to a  name. Whether the material is right for me or not, I like to meet people. I do think  its important for aspiring authors to attend conferences. I do think they are worth it. As someone who has presented, I also feel they are worth it. At conferences, youre among a group of people who are all there for the same reason- there is always an interesting dialogue. VP: Say you have an offer from an agent. How can you tell if he or she is the one? EH:  Having an agent is a personal decision- and there are so many out there that I think its important to find someone who is similar to you in philosophy. Whether your and your agent have similar personalities, I think its important that you agree on how things should be handled. Some people may prefer someone who is really aggressive in the way they handle things; some people are more laid back and would prefer to have someone with a similar temperament. Its exciting for an agent to be interested in your work, but if its not the right agent for you, its not going to be a great experience. VP: Thanks so much for your time and thoughts, Elizabeth.
